What Is AI Reputation Management? A 2026 Guide
Short answer
AI reputation management is the continuous practice of measuring what ChatGPT, Gemini and the other AI assistants say about a brand when buyers ask, correcting the public sources those answers are built from, and re-measuring the same questions until the change is proven. It covers whether the brand is named at all, how it is described, how it is judged against its rivals, and which sources the answer was built from. GEO, AEO and SEO are tactics inside that loop. The reputation is the whole surface.
Shoppers who arrive at US retail sites from an AI assistant convert 60% better than non-AI traffic and spend 53% more per visit (Adobe, July 2026). The brand the assistant names gets that buyer. This guide explains why the answer can be moved, where GEO, AEO and SEO stop, and how the fix works.
Why an AI answer about your brand changes from one day to the next
Largely because the model is not answering from memory. For a buyer's question about a category, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity usually search first, pull a handful of pages, and write the answer from those pages. Retrieval first, generation second. The technique is called RAG, retrieval-augmented generation, and it is the reason an AI answer can be moved at all.
The model is the same for every brand in your category. The pages it retrieves are not. Change what it retrieves and the answer follows.
Part of the day-to-day variation is ordinary model variance, not retrieval. That is why a single check is an anecdote, not a measurement, and why the same questions have to be asked again under the same conditions before a change can be called real.
Where SEO, AEO and GEO stop
The split between retrieval and generation is the cleanest way to see what each discipline does, and where it ends.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | AI reputation management | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main question | Does our page rank? | Is our page picked as the direct answer? | Is our page retrieved and cited by a generative engine? | What does the engine conclude about us, and did it change after we acted? |
| Step it works on | Retrieval: the search index | Retrieval: answer extraction | Retrieval: the generative engine's search | The written answer, and the loop back to the sources behind it |
| Typical work | Keywords, links, technical health | Direct answers, FAQ structure, schema | Crawler access, quotable facts, entity signals, citations | Measure across buyer questions, correct the sources, re-measure, prove |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks | Answer placements | Mentions, citations, share of voice | Named or not, description, judgment against rivals, movement after each fix |
Differences in emphasis, not fixed boundaries. Much of the work overlaps; the question each one answers does not.
The first three win the retrieval step. Then the model writes. At that point it has your page and nine others, most of them not yours: listings, reviews, comparisons, forums. It decides whether to name you, how to describe you, and whether to recommend you over the brand next to you.
Being retrieved is necessary. It is not being chosen.
One distinction worth making explicit, because the term is used both ways online. AI reputation management is not online reputation management done with AI tools, meaning software that answers reviews or scores sentiment. It is the management of the reputation a brand has inside AI answers.
Why it matters now: the buyer who arrives from an AI answer
In August 2026, Adobe Digital Insights published its AI Traffic Trends Report, built on more than a trillion visits to US retail sites. The July 2026 readings, AI-referred visitors against non-AI traffic:
+60% conversion
AI-referred visitors converted 60% better than non-AI traffic, the eleventh month in a row that AI referrals out-converted everything else.
+53% revenue per visit
AI-referred shoppers generated 53% more revenue per visit. One year earlier the inverse was true.
+62% traffic, year on year
AI-referred traffic to US retail sites rose 62% year on year, and 1,219% since October 2024.
The conversion gap was 42% in March, 54% in May, 60% in July. Three readings, one direction. AI still sends a small share of total traffic, so the volume is not the story. The story is where the decision gets made. By the time someone clicks out of a chat, most of the comparing is done. They are heading to the brand the assistant named.
The brand the AI names gets the buyer. A brand that is not in the answer never reached the comparison, and nothing downstream, no landing page, no retargeting, no discount, reaches that buyer.
A new dimension of brand protection
I spent eight years in brand protection before Aeloria. Everything in that discipline starts after the decision: a buyer chooses you, and the job is to make sure what they receive is real and came through the right channel. The AI answer sits before the decision. If your brand is not in it, there is no buyer to protect. That is why we treat the AI answer as a reputation, not as a marketing channel.
How the fix works
The fix follows the same split as the diagnosis.
On the retrieval side
Make sure the engines' crawlers can reach and read the pages that matter, and that the pages they actually pull for your category say what you would say. Most of those pages are not yours, so the work goes where the engines look: listings, review platforms, the comparison pages they cite.
On the generation side
Give the model something it can lift. A clear definition of what you are. Numbers with a source attached. A plain comparison with your rivals. The same facts repeated on independent pages, because most of what the engines cite is not the brand's own site.
What does not work
A magic file, keyword stuffing, format tricks, and anyone promising a guaranteed citation uplift. The engines' own documentation says the first does nothing on its own, and the published studies do not support the last.
The loop
- Measure. Run the questions your buyers actually ask, across the engines and markets you sell in, and record what each answer concludes and which pages it cites.
- Fix. Correct the sources behind the answer, starting with the ones you do not own, in the order that moves the most for the least effort.
- Prove. Ask the identical questions again, on the same engines, under the same conditions, and see what moved.
- Then again. Models update, competitors publish, pages change. The loop is the moat, not the trick.
A fix you cannot measure is a fix you cannot defend in front of a board.
How Aeloria does it
Aeloria is an AI reputation management platform built in Zürich. It measures how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and the other AI assistants describe, judge, cite and recommend a brand across the questions its buyers actually ask, in the markets and languages the brand sells in, and re-runs the identical questions after each fix ships.
- It starts from your strategy, not from a generic prompt list. The measurement is set up around what the brand has decided: the messages it wants to own, the markets it sells in and the ones it is entering, the rivals it chooses to be compared with, and the positions it plans to take next. A new product line or a new market goes into the measurement before the launch, so the baseline exists when the campaign starts. The score then measures one thing: the distance between the story the brand chose and the story AI tells.
- One score a board can read. Brand AURA, 0 to 100: how likely a customer who asks AI is to find you and choose you, built from whether AI names you, whether the story it tells is the one you chose, how it judges you, and the themes it attaches to your brand. Every part of it opens to the AI answers behind it.
- A ranked list of what to fix first. Ordered by what it will change against what it costs, and weighted toward where the brand is going rather than only where it is. Each item quotes the AI answer that caused it and names the page to change.
- Proof that it worked. After a fix ships, the identical questions run again on the same engines. The difference is measured, not claimed.
- Every assistant your buyers actually ask. No two buyers ask the same assistant, so the measurement has to follow them. Every plan reads ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Iconic adds Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot. Enterprise is configured around whatever a category actually runs on: the platform is integrated with eight AI assistants today, and the list grows as buyers move. Whatever a plan reads is inside its published price, never a per-engine fee.
- Every price published. From €69 a month to measure (Rising), €239 a month for the ranked fix list (Leading), €359 for the full depth (Iconic), agency plans from €719 with three brands included. The first assessment is free, with no card, and the first 30 days of the fix list are free as well. Every subscription started in 2026 keeps its price for 24 months.
"We looked at several tools: most of them stop at monitoring and data collection. Then we discovered Aeloria. With Aeloria, we can go further: a clear snapshot of all the brands we work with, visibility into key trends, and actionable recommendations."
